dc.description.abstract Most information from residential rental Web applications does not have enough detailed information, coverage, or maintenance. In this research study, I explore the hypothesis that residential rental Web applications are more useful when most content is user-generated content from consumers. I refer to residential rental Web applications for which the main content is user-generated by consumers as Collaborative Residential Rental Web Applications. I demonstrate the design, implementation, and empirical evaluation of a Collaborative Residential Rental Web Application. In the literature review, I find that user-generated content could improve users' experience, but governance is also important to maintain the quality of information when content is user-generated. I took these findings into account when I designed the prototype Collaborative Residential Rental Web Application by making user-generated content the main content source and using a virtual point system to ensure that content quality can be maintained. In an evaluation, I asked users who have apartment-choosing experience and familiarity with the Internet and mobile applications to test the prototype application and a traditional non-collaborative counterpart From the experimental results, I find that collaborative residential rental Web applications have a great deal of potential to be more useful than the non-collaborative counterparts. en_US
