dc.description.abstract The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is an emerging technology being adapted for use in a wide range of applications. Real-time monitoring is an essential application that can be adapted for use UAV technology. On the other hand, sensor networks are networks constructed from various sensor nodes that can share sensor data with other systems as well as provide accessibility to globally distributed users. In this thesis, we propose a system for real-time monitoring combining UAV technology and sensor network technology. We constructed a UAV system using remote-controlled helicopter and various sensors such as GPS, gyrocompass, laser ranger and digital camera. Furthermore, we extended the Sensor Observation Service (SOS) and Sensor Service Grid (SSG) (Honda et al., 2009) to support mobile sensor nodes. We conducted experiments ying the helicopter over an area of the interest. During the ight, the system measured environmental data using its sensors and captured images of the ground. After data was collected, it was sent to a SOS node as the ground station. Finally, the measurement data was published using SSG to give real-time access to globally distributed users. en_US
