dc.description.abstract Dental surgical simulators have started to gain popularity as a tool for practicing clinical skills. With virtual – reality based simulators, students can practice on virtual patients while experts can observe their operation and guide them. However, in order to become intelligent tutoring systems, those simulators still need various assessment tools and feedback mechanisms to allow students to practice on their own. With proper feedback and assessment on the quality of work, students could practice to improve their skills to produce high – quality work. This thesis presents an assessment model to assess outcomes from dental procedure and give a score to each outcome. Shape Context is employed for matching a gold standard outcome and a sample with unknown grade. Matches are divided into parts, with each part reflecting a logical area in the outcome. Approximation of distance for each parts to represent deformation from ideal logical area is computed and will be used as classification features for Support Vector Machine (SVM). The predicted class from SVM will represent the grade of the outcome. Results show that the implemented system has an accuracy of 56.9 percent. As an extension of this thesis, we discuss about possible techniques to improve the accuracy of the system. en_US
