dc.description.abstract With today rapidly developing mobile industry with increasing capability devices and demands for more realistic 3D simulations for applications such as games, a physics engine is a potential solution for a time-saving development and a high level of realism. From this, the Hybrid Cache-based Physics Engine for a mobile platform has been proposed. The study had been nalized into two parts. First, the development of an open-source physics engine for a popular mobile platform, the Symbian OS. Second, the study of cache shadows and inelastic deformations which o er additional features and potential optimization to the physics engine. For the rst part, the engine being developed is called "Symbian Open Dynamics Engine or SODE" where it based on the Open Dynamics Engine(ODE) which runs on desktop platforms for simulating a realistic rigid-body simulation in a 3D world. SODE composed of two libraries which are the ported ODE physics library and the 3D Renderer library. The latter o ers a 3D simulation to be rendered on the mobile and embedded devices written with the open standard 2D/3D graphics library, OpenGL ES. For the second part of this study, methods for implementing cache shadows and deformations had been experimented, where the di culty lies in the interpolation between cache models. Overall, the thesis should be bene ting to whose interest lies in games, graphics, physics and mobile platforms. en_US
