dc.description.abstract Abstract In th is thesis, we investigate various techni ques used by trade broke rs in barter trade exchanges in order to maximize trade volume and ensure equitable participation of members in trade. In particular, we propose ma thematical models to solve the problem of maintaining balance of trade and fair distri bution of trade, which maximizing single-period trade volume. We show how the trade balance and fairness problems can be represented in terms of network flow models and propose an efficient algorithm for the case of uniform product cost or when fractional solution ar e acceptable. For the case where integer solutions are required for non-uniform product cost, we present two rounding algorithms that take the fractional output of the netw ork model and produce an integer solution. We use a linear, non-linear, and intege r programming solver (Lingo so ftware) in order to verify the solution of our algorithm. We empirically compare solu tions from the network flow with rounding approach and mixed integer programming approach. We evaluate the effectiveness of of our optimization proce dure in maintaining tr ade balance by using a simulator built using transaction history data from a trade exchange. We also measure the effect of trade balance optimization on the l ong-run trade volume. Ou r results confirm the barter trade exchange rule of thumb that maximizing single-period trade volume while maintaining balance of trade helps to maximize trade volume over the long run.
