Abstract:
In this thesis, we study the legal disputes related to personal finance. We focus on the legislation Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), which is specially meant for protecting the
consumer from illegal debt collection practices. When a debtor fails to pay the debt and debt
collector intends to collect the debt from the debtor, the debt collector is required to satisfy
their obligation under FDCPA. Under FDCPA, the debt collector is prohibited to overshadow
the right of the debtor to dispute the debt. The debt collector is also prohibited to make any
threat to the debtor which cannot be legally taken. We model two doctrines from this legislation namely, Overshadow of consumer’s right to dispute and misleading representation. Our
model is based on Modular Assumption Based Argumentation (MABA) Framework. The
implementation of this model is done using Prolog. We tested this model on two U.S. court
cases on Overshadow and then two U.S court cases on Misleading representation
