dc.description.abstract Traditional e-commerce platforms allow users to access information and services through a web browser, but provide little or no support for access through a mobile phone. This research considers two solutions for extending open source e-commerce platforms to publish information for mobile devices. The first solution uses a plug-in that provides a bulletin-board of messages suitable for mobile browsers. The second solution uses a backend server accessed through web-services that is able to push messages to a mobile phone. As a case study, we consider the problem of how to route customer requests to back-office staff using the nopCommerce open source e-commerce platform. We developed prototypes for each solution, and compared them on metrics of functionality, usability, extensibility, performance, and reliability. The result of this evaluation suggests that the push messaging solution provides greater functionality and extensibility than the browser-based solution. en_US
