dc.description.abstract Modern barter differs from traditional barter primarily in that it uses a form of private label currency for transactions. An inte rmediary called the trade exchange then manages all trade in order to maximize trade volume, which is equivalent to maximizing long-run cash flow. This thesis addresses the problem of visualizing various aspects of barter trade networks , including cash flow. We develop a novel algorithm to decompose a trade network into a set of cash flow cycles and one to analyze the fragility of a tr ade network. We apply a numbe r of existing visualization techniques to graphically display the result s of these algorithms and to perform other analyses of the networks such as cl ustering and grouping. The techniques are implemented and evaluated on a set of sample problems.
