Abstract:
Today’s enterprise netw
orks are composed of
multiple types of in
terconnected networks.
On top of these enterprise networks, there
exist various systems and services supporting a
wide variety of applications
within an organization. Prov
iding a secure, reliable and
efficient operating environment to support
the organization’s dail
y activities and its
business is the most challenging task faced
by operation and management staff today.
In order to provide such an
environment, enterprise networks must be monitored for
performance, configuration, security, accounting and fault management. Current
management practices typically involve the us
e of complex, hard-to-
learn and hard-to-use
tools for managing networks. What is needed
desperately is a set of simple, uniform,
ubiquitous tools for managing networks. Web-ba
sed management is a promising approach
that can provide such a solution.
This research focuses on the use of Web tec
hnology for the purposes of enterprise network
traffic monitoring, analysis and reporting. In
this research, we first examine the
requirements for enterprise network traffic
monitoring, analysis and reporting, and then
present a design and implementation of a We
b-based network traffic monitoring and
reporting system that satisfies those requireme
nts. We also present guidelines we have
formulated and used for analyzi
ng enterprise network traffic.
