A new remote access server has been installed for CSIM faculty and staff to access the network through dial-up. The machine is named ras.cs.ait.ac.th.

Access Policy

Dial-up access to CSIM facilities is offered to CSIM faculty and staff only. Access account are individual and general policy about using AIT computer facilities apply to these dial-up accesses.

Access is not provided to students who should rather use the facilities offered by ITServ.

CSIM faculty and staff are the users registered in the group 20, 21 and 30.

Access Phone Number

Four lines are available for dial-up access, each fitted with 56K modem.

Phone numbers are: 0 2524 5723, 0 2524 5724, 0 2524 6158 and 0 2524 6159.

Account

Dial-up services use normal Unix user name and password.

Sharing the dial-up account would implie sharing the access to Unix account.

Authentication

Authentication is done via CHAP (challenge authetication), where the password is send with a non reversible encryption.

To activate CHAP authentication you musts elect CHAP authentication on Windows, you must disable the script file from the connection properties, in the Dial Up Networking window (see figure on the right).
You must also make sure that you don't enable the terminal window. This is selected in "General/Configure/Options" for Windows 98 and on the same page as the Scripting File for Windows 95.

CHAP not only provides secured authentication (that is the password is never sent in clear form on the connection), but it is also dramatically faster and more reliable.
