Abstract

In 90's, the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) changed users' behaviors for accessing information. The Internet is not merely a computer network but is rather a huge information resource for the users. The digital library is widely recognized as an important component for knowledge work on global and regional information infrastructures for the future. We can find various types of research and development projects on digital libraries in a number of countries. For example, in the United States, NSF, jointly with NASA and DARPA , has funded the Digital Library Initiative at six US universities, and they are going to start a new initiative as the second phase of DLI in 1998. The National Libraries in America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region are also actively working on digital libraries. Their activities include digitization of rare materials for preservation and access, electronic document delivery, information access environments for governmental information, electronic deposit and archive environments, and so forth. Thus, we can find various projects and activities in both academic and library societies. in both academic and library societies.
